BLOCKADE: Harry Allen Studio Work
Table I was commissioned to hand paint about a year and a half ago.
Interesting story: we decided to go with gouache paint because of it’s amazing mat finish and vivid colors. The colors on the top correspond to each “block column” all the way down, even underneath. Took well over 100 hours to complete if not more (taping each square and column, making sure none of the paint touched), but it was worth it because it turned out great and looked flawless.
We didn’t have time to seal the table with varnish before showcasing it at an opening in the studio, so we took a chance and just put up a sign that said “DONT TOUCH”.
Night’s almost over, and yes, you guessed it, some idiot puts his BEER on the table and knocks if over, spilling beer all over the top of it. Then he gets a napkin and tries to wipe it up…uh oh because gouache is water soluble, so that meant the napkin smears paint alllllll over the precious table, contaminating so many colors.
Took about 30 more hours to clean up the mess, then with the magic powers of Mary Kuzma the table was varnished and voila! no more spills.
Very happy to have been part of this project.
